All set in Palma to celebrate World Book Day 2014
This year various activities are planned in Palma de Mallorca for (re)discovering the pleasure of reading
As you well know, the sea and literature are the heart and soul of our hotel in Palma, Mallorca. The Sea of Poetry is composed of 126 exclusive guest rooms, each intimately linked with literature from different angles, through selections of verse or prose by different authors whose names are well known both in and outside of Spain, and who speak to us of the sea. So it's only natural that we should devote a few lines of our blog to speaking about World Book Day, which is just around the corner, and about how we commemorate it in Palma de Mallorca, our city.
Why is World Book Day celebrated on 23rd April? On this day, but in different years, great authors including Maurice Druon, K. Laxness, Josep Pla and Manuel Mejía Vallejo were born. It's also the day when great exponents of universal literature, including Miguel de Cervantes, William Shakespeare and Garcilaso de la Vega, died.
UNESCO had reasons galore for choosing 23rd April to pay worldwide homage to the book and its writers, and for inviting our society to (re)discover the pleasure of reading.
In Palma de Mallorca, World Book Day is very much a “feature” in the streets of our Old Town. The booksellers take a selection of their stock into the streets around the Plaça Major and the liveliest streets of the Old Town, which one can get to on foot or by public transport from the Costa Azul Hotel.
At some booksellers, when you buy one of their works, you receive a gift of a red rose. This custom has caught on over the years through the influence of the Diada de Sant Jordi, also on 23rd April, commemorating the death of St. George.
This year the Palma City Council, through PalmaJove, its resource centre for local youth, has compiled a very varied programme of activities planned for this day, including a book swap and a photographic outing. In addition, all the booksellers which are members of the Gremi de Llibreters de Mallorca (Mallorcan Booksellers' Guild) have planned workshops for all the family.
So, on 23rd April we encourage you to listen to some sound advice from Mallorcan booksellers to help you give someone dear to you a book that they will love.
