Stay at the Hotel Costa Azul and discover the amazing wines of Mallorca

Over the last 25 years, the wines of Mallorca have experienced a revival, and today the island has around 70 wineries and over 500 brands of wine. Every year, many wine lovers go to Mallorca to visit its wine cellars and taste their excellent wines with Protected Designation of Origin (PDO). Most of them choose autumn, harvest time, to experience first hand all the traditions and customs that surround the making of this product.

In this post we want to take you through the main wine regions on the island.

Towards Inca, we find one of the most important wine regions in Mallorca: PDO Binissalem. It includes the municipalities of Binissalem, Sencelles, Santa Maria del Camino, Consell and Santa Eugenia and has 14 wine cellars.

The area produces every type of wine, although red wines represent around 75% of the entire production. The indigenous mantonegro grape variety is the base for its reds, whereas white wines are mainly produced from prensal blanca. The vintages from 2004, 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2010 are rated as "excellent".

Another area that stands out is located in the regions of Pla de Mallorca and Llevant, which have the PDO Pla i Llevant. This geographical indication groups together 18 municipalities, and it has 18 wineries registered. The area is known for its chardonnay white wines, its dry muscats and its red wines, which are classified as “very interesting” due to their intense color and fruity aromas.

However, wine is not only produced inland: the Tramuntana-Costa Nord area also makes great wines. The monovarietal whites are especially important, such as chardonnays or Malvasia, the latter being typically produced in the municipality of Banyalbufar.

Many of these wineries organize guided tours to visit their facilities and vinyeards as well as to taste their wines. If you are interested in visiting any of the wine cellars, you may ask our reception staff and they will help you arrange your visit to any of the ones on the island.

And of course, our restaurants in Palma de Mallorca have an excellent selection of Mallorcan wines that marry perfectly with the island’s varied cuisine. It’s the perfect choice for lunch or dinner in Palma. Ask for our wine list, and let our maître d' advise you. We know you will be pleasantly surprised.
