Things to do of cultural interest this spring in Mallorca
These are the "unmissable" cultural activities and events that the Costa Azul Hotel recommends to you this spring
Following a damper-than-usual and quite rainy winter, we can't wait to be able to indulge ourselves again by going for a walk, sunbathing on our terraces and going touring around the island. With this in mind, we've compiled a selection of "unmissable" cultural activities and events in Mallorca recommended for you by the Costa Azul Hotel this spring.
"Gabinet: Manolo Millares" (Exhibition devoted to Manolo Millares) // Es Baluard - Palma Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, a friend and partner of the Costa Azul Hotel's, gives us an insight into the life of artist Manolo Millares (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 1926 – Madrid, 1972) and the research that has been carried out into his works on show at the Museum. The exhibition, which is on until 11th May, sets out to show the Canarian painter and engraver's work in a new light. This is just one of the many cultural and educational activities planned by Es Baluard, which you can view in full detail in its programme of events.
Palma de Mallorca Auditorium // Just yards from our hotel in Palma de Mallorca, at the Palma de Mallorca Auditorium, you have an opportunity to attend a performance of Macbeth (from 20th to 23rd March), one of William Shakespeare's best-known works: a tragedy about all-consuming ambition and treachery. In the backstage world of theatre, speaking the play's name out loud is believed to bring bad luck; so it is given the code name of "the Scottish play". Later on - the 28th May - the Moscow Ballet will be returning to Palma Auditorium with the original version of Swan Lake. An opportunity to see again the ballet that Mallorcans love most.
The history of Palma from the Sea // The newly-established Aedificat Foundation is putting on for us a cultural activity that will be held on Saturdays in March. Carlos Garrido will be leading a two-hour boat trip during which he will show us the historical features of Palma's seafront as viewed from the sea, on board Nostromo I. All with the aim of giving his passengers a unique and different view of our heritage. From The Sea of Poetry, we can't recommend this activity to you too highly!
28th Palma Photography Competition // The 28th Palma Photography Competition 2014 was held on 26th January during this year's Fiestas for Sant Sebastià celebrations in Palma de Mallorca. The sequel to the competition is an exhibition, on now and until 28th March at Casal Solleric, of the pictures taken by the entrants on the day, including both the prize-winning pictures and a selection of photographs on the six themes set this year by the organizers, one of which is The city and the sea.
Spring workshops at the Pilar i Joan Miró Foundation // As in previous years, this spring the Pilar i Joan Miró Foundation is putting on for us a very varied programme of activities. Through theoretical workshops about the plastic arts, until 5th April the Foundation is providing an experience of contemporary art for families, and giving instruction in creative processes through the use of colour. And from 31st March to 8th April the Seminar "Feminisme(s), teories de gènere i polítiques artístiques" (Feminism(s), gender theories and artistic policies), will be on as part of the "Views of Balearic Women" Festival
Our hotel with sea views is located very close to the city centre; so, you can get to the nerve centre where all these activities begin or are held, either on foot or by public transport.
